I think the magical girl genre is mostly lesbian, gay and sexual subtext with little actual magical girl stuff in it. It's a way for young asian girls to explore their gayness and sexuality without social backlash. I've noticed every magical girl anime has at least one of these tropes:
>Two implied gay men in a relationship
>A closeted lesbian best friend or rival
>A girl having a crush on an older man
>Not being ready for something that's implied to be a metaphor for sex
>A villian that's neither male or female yet has both gender's anatomy
>A girl that wears boy's clothes and acts like a man
The genre overall gives off a very lgbt vibe. Maybe that's why trans people like it.
