how does internet censorship actually work
like all the ISPs just block sites that aren't on a whitelist but you can still get addresses from global DNSes or is it a proper intranet and you have to use a portal to connect to the real internet or what
here in the west internet censorship is the kind of thing a four year old could get through and I know china is a lot more like us than most people realize but I wonder about this one

Actually not really. It's still kinda prohibited by morals of old generations, but not suppressed publicly nor on the Internet. Most of the young people wouldn't just discriminate sexually minorities (sorry for my shitty English)

It's actually quite easy and cheap to get a vpn,and less known sites can be accessed without it(4chan, most of the german and russian sites)

Quite safe. I don't think people care that much about nationalities, and the travelling and general costs are in most cases cheap compared to that abroad, even in big cities. And Chinese young women really wouldn't miss the chance to bang a foreigner
