I had a hard time getting google to index my site, if it's not being mentioned by other people, you have to submit it for indexing which takes a very long time, meta tags are completely ignored, they go entirely by content on the site and whether their heuristics can detect if the page is recent, providing the sitemap as an RSS feed helps with this as they have a definite timestamp they can display on search results and your shit sinks on the pagerank if it's very old
